He did not arrive with noise or hype, but with chords, keys, and a voice that slipped quietly into South Africa’s soundscape. Mohau Matlaletsa, known on stage as Mhaw Keys, is a producer, vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter whose music has gradually built a loyal audience across the continent. Born on 29 November 1987 in Botshabelo, Free State, and later based in Alexandra, Johannesburg, he has carried his craft from underground sessions to international platforms without losing the intimacy of his sound.
Mhaw Keys’ earliest recognition came with The Outcast EP in 2020. The project introduced listeners to his versatility, weaving tracks such as Lebala Kanna, Umamakhe, and Mwari into a story of collaboration and experimentation. Two years later, his full-length album “Pariah,” confirmed his status as more than a sideline player in the movement. With 17 tracks, the album balanced soulful reflections and high-energy rhythms, while paying homage through tributes like Bheja (for Black Motion) and King of Piano (for Kabelo Motha).
His discography includes singles like “Amen,” and “Ungowami,” with Nontokozo Mkhize, Mokapelo with Shakes & Les, and standout collaborations with Kabza De Small, Boohle, Cassper Nyovest, Young Stunna, Deeper Phil, Bongza, Nkulee 501, Skroef28, Da Muziqal Chef, and Kelvin Momo. Each release confirms his ear for blending intimacy with resonance, a trait that makes his music both personal and communal.
